About Our Lab

The Learning, Achievement, & Motivated Behaviour (LAMB) research lab, rooted in the unique context of Aotearoa New Zealand, is dedicated to understanding and enhancing the educational and psychological experiences of our young people (rangatahi). Recognising the distinct challenges and opportunities that come with growing up in Aotearoa, we are driven by the belief that every young person deserves the opportunity for puāwaitanga (flourishing, thriving) and be treated with mana (respect, honor, and dignity) irrespective of the hurdles they encounter. Our multidisciplinary approach bridges the realms of applied psychology, educational psychology, community psychology, and youth mental health, ensuring a holistic understanding of the diverse experiences of our youth.

Our research methodology is both robust and flexible, employing mixed methods that encompass quantitative analyses for comprehensive data-driven insights, as well as qualitative approaches to capture the nuanced stories and lived experiences of young people. This combination allows us to paint a fuller picture, ensuring that our strategies and recommendations are grounded in both empirical evidence and the rich tapestry of individual narratives. Our primary goals are to provide actionable insights to families, communities, and leaders, and to give a voice to young people in navigating the complex transitions in their lives, from academic shifts to personal and societal challenges.

Beyond research, the LAMB lab is deeply committed to practical applications and community engagement. We are proud to offer workshops and professional development programmes tailored to the needs of schools. By sharing our findings and expertise, we aim to empower educators and institutions to better support their students, fostering environments that inspire confidence, resilience, and a lifelong passion for learning.
